How are the three date digits calculated?

The first digit comes from the month plus day plus the digits of the year, reduced to one digit. The second digit is 10 minus the first digit. The third digit comes from the month plus day, reduced to one digit.

How The Date Digits Are Made

Step 1 — First Digit Add the month, the day, and each digit of the year.

8 + 18 + 2 + 0 + 2 + 6 = 36

Reduce to one digit = 9

Example: if the total is 36, add 3 + 6 to get 9.

Step 2 — Second Digit Pick 3 uses the 10 digits from 0 through 9. That is where the number 10 comes from.

10 - 9 = 1

The first and second digits always add up to 10.

Step 3 — Third Digit Add only the month and day.

8 + 18 = 26

Reduce to one digit = 8

Then use every two digits to make the three pair groups shown above.
